Summit the Mountain


Summit the mountain.

If you have ever climbed a mountain, or even a really large hill, you'll know that along the way you will trip on rocks, stumble on loose gravel, get tired and take a rest, stop to enjoy the view, and have any number of other pauses in your journey to the summit.

Here is the thing, at no point do you stop and say—I slipt, I fell, I paused, I stopped to enjoy myself— so basically I'm at the bottom of the mountain again. Let us call that perspective. When climbing a mountain, it is easy to keep perspective, you've climbed part of the way up a freaking mountain after all.

However, in your health and wellness journey, it is much more difficult to keep the same perspective. Missing the gym once or twice (or even a month, two months, or a year), getting an injury, slow progress, stopping to enjoy where you are at for the moment (social events, holidays, life in general), or progress that stalls for a bit— and "it is all over."

"I have to start all over."

"I'm at the beginning again."

"All that work was for nothing"

Let me let you in on a little secret, no, you are not starting all over.

You, metaphorically, climbed halfway up a freaking mountain and slipped a bit halfway up. Gather yourself. Take a look around. And keep going until you summit the mountain.

The big thing people miss in health and wellness is that "slow progress is still progress." Everyone has their own health and wellness journey. You have to walk your own journey the way everyone else has walked theirs—one step at a time. Get rid of the all-or-nothing mentality and recognize that you have to be a bit better on each step, and to keep moving forward.
