Sage Suppers Dinner with Dr. John Berardi: an evening of mentoring with the man at the top of the nu

Dinner with Dr. John Berardi

To begin with, I met Dr. Berardi at his hotel in downtown Toronto. I got there super early and felt like a small child about to meet Santa Claus. He walked into the lobby with a huge smile on his face, lit up the room, and greeted me like an old friend—this guy is one likable individual. (Having done PN1, PN2, and watched a million of his videos, I felt like I already knew him and throughout the evening he was just as genuine as he appears online)

Dr. Berardi gave me a gift! It was an ice-wine from the countryside where he used to live (coincidentally, the ship you see in the video is right where he used to live and we likely drove next to the vineyards where the wine is from).

After Dr. Berardi checked in, we WALKED to dinner. Now if you know me in person, I love walking for about a million reasons, but being able to walk through downtown Toronto and chat with someone you truly admire is one the coolest experiences ever. During the walk the conversation was quite casual, same thing goes for dinner. Dr. Berardi is plain easy to chat with. I had a HUGE list of topics and questions I had drafted in the weeks leading up to this trip, but trashed them in favor of being present and enjoying the experience.

Here are just a few topics covered:

  • MMA (Dr. Berardi handles Georges St. Piere's nutrition amongst others)

  • Family (A ton of his time is devoted to his family and his children—he works from home)

  • Coaching

  • Nutrition

  • Fitness

  • Financial planning

  • Social dynamics

  • Roles with regard to work

  • Sibling dynamics

  • Parenting

  • Dry-aged beef

  • Food intolerance

  • Dual citizenship and the differences between Canada and the United States (Dr. Berardi is a dual citizen)

  • Perfectionist tendencies

  • Public speaking

  • I feel like I could go on forever, but you get the point

I am going to be selfish and guard a lot of the amazing info that Dr. Berardi was kind enough to share, but I do want to leave some salient points for anyone reading this.

Dr. Berardi made a comment when I asked him if the coaching techniques and skills are simply ingrained in his behavior—"Actually, my default mode is 'suck.' I have to try really hard at some of these things." That blew me away. If you have seen anything he has put out, it all seems extremely well put together with every detail attended to. He also chat conversationally almost as polished as one of his Precision Nutrition videos. This surprised me and has been something I have really been reflecting on—doing good work is something we ALL have to WORK on.

Here was the second thing that really kinda surprised me—Dr. Berardi practices what he preaches. Here is what I mean, during dinner he put his utensils down seemingly after every bite. It was awesome! If you have followed any of the Precision Nutrition content, you will know that the first thing that is taught to clients is HOW to eat, not WHAT to eat. The first habit almost always being eat slowly. One of the lessons to build such a skill is to put your utensils down in between each bite of food. Dr. Berardi legitimately does this—every bite.

Here is the last take away—Dr. Berardi knows EVERYONE! That's a bit of hyperbole, but not much. Anyone who I brought up that is BIG TIME in the health and fitness industry, he had a personal story or anecdote about that person. Also, tons of combat athletes. He's done seminars, worked with, and been involved in a ton of the elite levels. It was really amazing to be able to hear his insights on many of those experiences.

Overall my takeaways were that you have to be diligent, thoughtful, and genuine if you want to get to the top of any industry.

Thank you so much to Dr. Berardi and Ted Pearlman for such an amazing experience that I will never forget.
